What does Neurodivergent mean
What Does Neurodivergent Mean?
Neurodivergence refers to people whose brains process information differently from what society considers neurotypical.
This includes people with:
autism
ADHD
dyslexia
dyspraxia
Tourette’s syndrome
sensory processing differences
and other neurological variations
Neurodivergence is not a single experience. Every individual has different needs, strengths and challenges.
However, many neurodivergent people experience similar difficulties within environments that are designed around neurotypical expectations. Travel environments often amplify these difficulties.
Neurodiversity Statistics in the UK
Awareness of neurodiversity is growing across the UK. Some important statistics include:
Autism Statistics
According to the National Autistic Society:
More than 1 in 100 people in the UK are autistic.
There are an estimated 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK.
Many experts believe the true number may be even higher due to underdiagnosis, especially among women and older adults.
ADHD Statistics
Research suggests approximately:
3–5% of adults in the UK may have ADHD.
ADHD diagnoses in adults have increased significantly in recent years.
There is also growing awareness of how ADHD presents differently in women and high-masking individuals.
SEND Families
According to UK government data:
More than 1.5 million pupils in England receive SEND support.
Hundreds of thousands of children have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
This means a very large number of UK families are navigating additional support needs during travel.
Mental Health and Anxiety
Neurodivergent individuals are also statistically more likely to experience:
anxiety disorders
sensory sensitivity
burnout
social exhaustion
travel-related stress
These figures highlight an important reality: Neurodivergent travellers are not a tiny niche. They represent a significant and growing part of the travel market.
