The hidden cost of getting travel wrong

When people think about the cost of a holiday, they usually focus on the price they pay to book it.

Flights, accommodation, transfers, excursions and spending money are all easy to calculate. What is much harder to calculate are the hidden costs of choosing the wrong holiday in the first place.

For many neurodivergent individuals and families, the most expensive mistake is not necessarily booking the most expensive holiday. It is booking a holiday that doesn't meet their needs. The hotel looked perfect online many holidays look fantastic in photographs. A beautiful swimming pool, stylish rooms and glowing reviews can make a hotel seem like the perfect choice. However, photos rarely tell the full story.

The hotel may be located next to a busy road, a nightclub, or an entertainment venue. The transfer may be over an hour long after an already exhausting journey. The beach may be much further away than expected. For some travellers, these may be minor inconveniences. For others, they can completely change the holiday experience.

Food Matters more than many people realise one of the most common concerns I hear is around food even on a honeymoon. Many travellers have safe foods, dietary requirements, sensory sensitivities, allergies, or simply feel more comfortable knowing familiar options will be available. A hotel may advertise an excellent buffet, but what does that actually mean? Are there vegetarian options? Is there pasta or pizza available? Are there familiar foods available if trying something new feels overwhelming? What happens if the restaurant only serves local cuisine and nothing feels safe to eat? Suddenly, a holiday that seemed like great value becomes stressful and expensive as travellers seek alternative restaurants every day.

Transport and Transfers can make or break a trip a journey itself is often overlooked. A flight may be inexpensive, but what happens when it arrives late at night and there is still a long transfer to the hotel? What happens if public transport is required but feels confusing or inaccessible? What happens if the accommodation is beautiful but isolated, with no nearby shops, restaurants or pharmacies? These small details can have a huge impact on how relaxed and confident people feel during their holiday.

Unexpected Costs add up quickly a holiday that appears cheaper at first can become more expensive when unexpected costs start appearing.

Examples might include: Taxi journeys because local facilities are further away than expected.

Restaurant meals because the hotel food is unsuitable.

Additional baggage because packing for contingencies becomes necessary.

Excursions that need to be changed or cancelled. Upgrading rooms to escape noise or discomfort. The original holiday may have looked like a bargain, but the overall cost becomes much higher.

The Emotional Cost the biggest hidden cost is often emotional. Returning home feeling exhausted, overwhelmed or disappointed can make future travel feel even more difficult. Many people begin to lose confidence in their ability to travel. Families may decide it is easier not to travel at all. This is why finding the right holiday matters so much.

Travel Should Fit the Traveller there is no such thing as a perfect holiday. There is, however, a holiday that is a better fit for your needs.

Sometimes that means choosing a quieter location.

Sometimes it means checking food options before booking.

Sometimes it means being close to a pharmacy, supermarket or medical facilities.

Sometimes it means paying slightly more for a hotel that genuinely works for you.

The goal is not simply to book a holiday.

The goal is to create an experience that feels comfortable, enjoyable and achievable. Because the most expensive holiday is not always the one that costs the most.
